Just as beginnings and endings are fictions to time which flows on endlessly, the completion of a painting may be, rather than an ending, a decision to stop at the point that feels most appropriate. Lee Youngsoo's work begins with particular memories, yet painting is not an attempt to preserve or hold onto them. What the artist tries to capture is not a specific moment in time or a particular subject, but rather fragments of the past that are felt through the skin and bones. Though these memories have receded too far to emerge as distinct images, the artist attends to sensations and emotions that continue to linger within the body. Painting appears at the point where present and past, memory and bodily movement intersect and accumulate. Rather than adopting recognizable forms or images, or explicitly revealing a personal narrative, Lee seeks to make visible the very process of tracing the flow of memory⋯

Tens of millions of years ago, a single mosquito fell into the sap of a tree and died. The sap hardened into amber, preserving the mosquito inside for tens of millions of years. The idea that an already vanished world could be entirely reconstructed from a single drop of blood left in the mosquito’s belly became a story. We loved that story. It was an absurd fantasy, yet perhaps all the more fascinating because of its absurdity. But for that fantasy to be possible, one crucial premise must hold: the fragment must contain the whole. A single bone must be enough to infer the way its owner walked. A cross-section of rock strata must reveal the climate of millions of years ago. The chemical composition of a single pebble must allow us to trace where it came from⋯

Sound does not linger; it fades away and vanishes. Yet the sound of that day does not vanish.

A Sound Suspended Before Completion

Each different voice recounts an incident. The tone varies, and so does the content. The sounds that seep out of the artwork are human voices. A human voice carries life within it. It is a living sound. Thus, we could say that the sound carries the breath of life. The sound of breathing—it is the sound of breath entering the body, passing through the vocal cords, and emerging again. Yet when that sound is recorded, it somehow resembles a mechanic sound. The life has vanished⋯

My skin had been fine for a while, but now it's a mess again. Spring in New York is so dry that I am constantly coughing, and every inch of my body itches so badly that it's all I can think about. Ah! My nail. It broke again. I casually flick it onto the desk. The jagged edge of the broken nail catches against my skin and gets on my nerves. I notice these tiny discomforts so easily, yet I rarely spare a thought for the piece of nail that's fallen away⋯

In 1969, humanity first set foot on the Moon. The landing of Apollo 11 was more than a technological achievement; it fundamentally altered the way human beings perceived the world. Until then, the Moon had been an object in the realm of myth and imagination for poets and artists. But the moment humans stepped onto its surface, the Moon ceased to be an unreachable, transcendent object. Many artists experienced what came to be called the “Apollo Shock.” Among them was the Korean artist Han Mook. He felt that existing pictorial languages could no longer explain the new age, and subsequently turned toward geometric abstraction. The moment humanity began conquering outer space, human perception itself began to change⋯
